Brolga Song -

Creating a Dreamtime Play

In this lesson the students will create a mini-play based on the short annimated story 'Brolga Song'. Building on the expressive body movements used in the first two lessons, this lesson will provide an opportunity for the students to add expressive dialouge.

'Story telling in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life is the means by which cultural systems, values and identity are preserved and transferred. Telling stories through song, music and dance, in order to connect people to land, and teach them about culture and the traditions of their ancestors is the way knowledge is passed from generation to generation.'

Brolga Song is a Dhuwa story that is told in Rembarranga language in Central Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia.

'A boy is alone withour his father or granfather to teach him his proper place in life. He searches for the spirit of his fathers and finally finds them in the brolgas.'

'The major theme of the story is the importance of culture, and of knowing one's place in Aboriginal society.'
